Hello everyone!

I'm thrilled to be co-hosting The Great Blog Train this month!

Destination: Naples, ITALY

 

We cruised to Naples this year. We live in sunny Queensland, Australia, so we know a good water view when we see one. We're surrounded by them. We all agreed that the view over the Bay of Naples is equal to any we've ever seen. Isn't it stunning?

 

Of course Naples is home to Mt Vesuvius, an active volcano. People live all around it's base, despite the constant threat of eruption because the volcanic soil is so rich and productive....you'd think Pompeii would have taught them a lesson or two, right?

 

 

Speaking of which, a visit to Pompeii was a heart stopping highlight. The images of the people caught in ash, forever entombed, were poignant, yet fascinating. There are several of these casts amongst the artefacts at Pompeii. They were created by pouring Plaster of Paris into the voids in the compacted ash, caused by the bodies trapped there, which of course reverted to dust over the ensuing 1,930 years. I learned at school as a child, that the people of Pompeii, did not have time to escape the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in AD79. Actually they did. But because there had been an earthquake 17 years before, that caused some rumbling, but no damage to life or property, they all assumed this was the same. By the time, they realised what was actually happening, the lava was upon them. We were completely absorbed by the ruins and the artefacts at Pompeii. A wonderful ancient history lesson for my 15 year old daughter!

 

Of course, Naples boasts a thriving seaside culture. Doesn't this beach with the rows of striped umbrellas, just conjure visions of Sophia Loren in an old 50s movie? Naples also oozes retro charm, and it's not hard to imagine Sophia leaning in a doorway, or Matt Damon and Jude Law as seen in The Talented Mr Ripley, lounging in the sun on a beach much like this one.

 

Famous opera singer Enrico Caruso was born in Naples, and often stayed in nearby Sorrento, at the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, where there remains a suite named after him. We enjoyed lunch at a nearby hotel, that wasn't quite so grand, but the food was superb all the same. There wasn't too much left of my hand crafted cannelloni filled with fresh ricotta and sundried tomato, as you can see!

 

The region is famous for olives and lemons, and look at the size of these! I have a dainty hand and these beauties make it look even tinier!

 

And Positano (be still my beating heart!), is just a hop, skip and a jump away, so a visit to this picturesque Cliffside village is an absolute must.
