Saturdays Question...Why Me?

On My Tray of Bliss Today, is one of life's great questions.

Why Me?

We've all done the pity party thing a few times in life, haven't we? Someone else got chosen as prefect, another girl was crowned Princess, another guy got the girl, someone else won the car, next door neighbours house nicer than mine...a lot of the time, it's more like Why Not Me, but you know what I mean.

Maybe therein lays the answer. Maybe instead of flinging hand to brow dramatically and wailing 'Why Me?', we should be standing resolute and asking 'Why Not Me?'.

All of these things give us the inner strength to cope with life. No-ones' life is all smooth sailing. That millionaire has a union challenging him, that SuperWife has an unhappy marriage, that Princess just lost a beloved grandparent, that family with the big house has a child just diagnosed with a terminal illness.

My Mum was great at dealing with adversity. Bless her, she faced adversity on many fronts throughout her life. First as a child in Europe during the Second World War, then as an immigrant in a not-very-welcoming era in Australias history, then as a young divorcee with seven children in a decade where that situation was uncommon.

Some of her words of wisdom still resonate with me.

"You can't change others, you can only change yourself"
"Choose your battles"
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"
"Be Wise, not Clever"
"Don't lower yourself to the level of the lowest common denominator"
"Love those the most who love you"
"The best revenge is overwhelming success"
"Even when you think nobody loves you, I will"
"Karma gets everyone in the end"

All good homespum stuff. But words that are seriously lacking these days. Words that make us kinder, gentler human beings. Positive self-talk in a negative world.

What do you say to yourself when the question is "Why Me?"

Is it time for a change to the response to that question for you and your loved ones?

What's on your Tray of Bliss today?

  1. I love reading your blog. And your posts in SS. It sounds like you had a wonderful mum. It also sounds you were a wise woman who listened to her.
