It is very hard to stand by and watch people we love make mistakes that we know could easily be rectified before they are disastrous. Alas, some people really don't care. They just expect the rest of the world to bail them out. I don't thing anyone minds that in a genuine emergency, but it wears a bit thin when it's ongoing. I have friends like that too. Sigh. You just cannot rely...Dear Alexa, this is true too! You just cannot rely on what we take for granted so often. Power outages, political unrest, financial institutions just shutting down. The insane becomes normal in those situations and you can do nothing but hope you have your backup plan in place! Thankyou for the information on Johnny Cake. My Mum had a much older sister who married an American soldier during WWII, so maybe that's where she learned to make it. It's certainly not something that is common here in Australia. Her version was more like a really thick hotcake, and was delicious! I too, know that sick feeling, the tossing and turning at night, and the endless sitting and re-calculating the figures to make a tight budget work. We got through it though, and as you said, we each had family to help. What if you don't? And yes! Your power outage is a perfect example of technological issues that are completely unexpected. Also when we were in Europe in 2015, and the Greek government was in turmoil, we actually witnessed first hand, the long queues at the ATMs where the Greek citizens were only able to withdraw tiny amounts of THEIR OWN money, due to the financial crisis being experienced there. It was insane! People had money, but the banks were not allowing anyone to access it! Who would imagine that could happen! It's a good case for money under the mattress, I tell you. That situation that I had, was ridiculous. I really should have pursued it more aggressively, but sometimes you have to choose your battles, and I had other battles that day...lol! All was well in the end, but I hope to never be in that position again either! Thanks for commenting! I agree that at this time of year, it's so important to remember that there are many in our communities who are struggling. So yes, it is more blessed to give, than to receive. Now I always try to take out the money I'll need for things like buses, museums, meals, etc, so if it happens again, at least I have something.

As for the Johnny Cakes, that's a traditional American dish that's rarely made these days. Two versions, warmed old corn bread covered in syrup/honey and butter or sliced in half and fried in butter/lard and covered in syrup/honey. It only has to happen to you once and you never forget. I have had several times in life without any money and it is truly scary. I felt sick over it and yet ultimately I had a family who would help me if I asked them. Without family back up I can't imagine what it would be like. Now I am obsessed with emergency funds, a large pantry and so on.
Re cash well in the last year I have seen a big power outage and no one could get cash or pay for anything with a card plus several banks had glitches and cards didn't work, ATMs didn't work etc. Let alone a situation like yours where there is no actual explanation and it is just too bad ( how reassuring!) so I am very careful to have cash and lecture my kids about that.
Like Lynette said we are very vulnerable to technology. this is a good reminder to have a back up plan! Thanks Mimi! We've all had those "oops" moments, which is why I remind my daughter, "PMKL" for "Phone, Money, Keys, License" before she leaves the house, with or without me. If something happens, she'll have a way to call for help, cash to deal with whatever is happening, a way to get back in the house if I'm not there to let her in, and her identification. We use the code because it's quick and it sounds less "mom-ish" if we happen to be around her friends.

As for the more prolonged situations, anyone who has been there has likely received help, understands that it truly is more blessed to give than receive, and is willing to provide assistance. At this time of year I am reminded more than usual of how blessed we are and how great the needs are in our community and around the world.

Blessings, LeighLeighhttp://achatovercoffee.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7492903313028603031.post-26443540771324958172016-11-22T00:13:59.839+10:002016-11-22T00:13:59.839+10:00Wonderful ideas Mimi. Not...Mimi i can relate to everything you have said. Not everything has happened to me but some certainly has.

Life throws challenges at us and it really depends on how we react as to how we come out the other side.

For instance I had a friend who's husband died. This was a number of years ago and the policy of the day was that the account could not be touched until certain criteria had been ascertained. They were in receipt of social security money too which also had to be addressed. My friend wasn't happy and moved her account to another bank - her perogative but seeing as she had worked for the bank when in the work force she also knew that she could have asked for part of the money in the account to help her over the initial first days.

The other person I know who is having some life challenges with her money has decided that she is not going to change her lifestyle and so cannot afford her flat. She has no idea where she is going to be living - her answer is 'I have my tent'. The meal out and the glasses of wine at the hotel with a 'friend' are more important than a roof over her head.

I have a saying - technology is great, when it works. Given that my husband is in the IT industry I hear many stories about the various things that have gone wrong.

Lynette
XXXXXAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7492903313028603031.post-25491244922861290962016-11-21T12:07:11.012+10:002016-11-21T12:07:11.012+10:00What a great post, Mimi.
